Reframing How We Think: “Get To” vs. “Have To”

Framing something as a thing we have to do vs. a thing we get to do engages two different motivational systems. Obligation and thinking we “have to” often reads as a threat, which raises the resistance we likely feel and the perceived effort involved.

Opportunity and thinking we “get to” reads as a challenge instead, which keeps us more relaxed and focused. Our body itself responds to whichever story we tell ourselves.

The same task can feel completely different depending on the words we use to describe it. “I have to call my mom back” vs. “I get to call my mom back.” Not something we’d necessarily say out loud, but the whole framing of the call can change. The words in the conversation are likely the same either way, but what changes is our perception, mainly subconsciously, of the task itself.

It’s easy to treat that difference as a matter of attitude and the sort of thing a relentlessly upbeat friend might say. Tell ourselves we get to, and the pressure is supposed to lift at least a little. It’s actually pretty accurate. Obligation and opportunity trigger two different motivational systems, and our body can definitely tell them apart.

Two Reasons, Two Different Experiences

The reason we give ourselves for doing something changes how hard it feels to actually do it. Psychologists who study motivation find two separate kinds. The first is called controlled motivation, which steps from pressure or a sense of owing someone, where our actions feel imposed even when we technically chose them. The other is called autonomous motivation, which stems from genuine interest in what we’re doing or from values deeply believe in, where the action feels like we had complete independence in choosing it. When we tell ourselves we “should” do something, it usually taps into the controlled motivation path. When we shift our thinking to “getting” to do something, it usually taps into autonomous motivation.

Studies done on people pursuing their goals show that the kind of motivation a person has is a strong predictor of whether the goal gets reached. As an example, an experiment that tracked university students across a full semester found that the ones who had a higher chance of success were ones who truly wanted what they committed to rather than those who had goals they felt obligated to want. The gritted-teeth kind of “forced pursuit” negatively affects our chances of achieving what we think we want.

A want-to goal doesn’t require us to fight ourselves, but a have-to goal sets us up for an uphill battle. This pattern shows up anywhere effort is involved, so effectively every aspect of life. A workout framed as something we need to do feels different from the same workout framed as the one hour that is genuinely ours. A standing call with a difficult colleague drains us when we attend out of obligation but costs less when we attend because the work actually matters to us despite our dislike for the coworker. The tasks are identical in each case, but the internal price isn’t.

How Our Body Reacts to an Obligation

An obligation tends to register in our body as a small threat. When we face something we feel we have to do, the brain runs a quick and mostly automatic check, asking “do my resources meet what this is about to ask of me?” When the answer comes back as no or barely, our body shifts into a threat state. Blood vessels narrow, our heart works harder to push against that resistance, and stress hormones climb.

We’re thrown into a stressed state before we can name it or even recognize that it’s happening. The task starts to seem heavier than it actually is. Our body has quietly filed the task under things to survive rather than things to do.

An opportunity registers differently. When the same demand gets read as something we are equipped for and want, our body moves toward a challenge state instead. Our heart still speeds up and the arousal still climbs, but our blood vessels open rather than clamp down and more blood reaches the areas that keep us productively engaged and alert. Studies find that people taught to read a racing heart as fuel rather than as fear showed exactly this shift, along with better thinking under pressure. The arousal was the same, but the story they told themselves about that arousal wasn't.

Reframing How We Think Isn’t Just Positive Thinking

The shift from “should” to “get to” is more than just switching out the wording. When a task lines up with something we genuinely want, it produces less internal friction of its own. Less friction means less effort is needed to start and to keep going because there is simply less that we have to push through. Even framing something we truly have to do as something we get to do can still make the task easier, even if it’s not something we genuinely want. It’s a mental trick, and the better approach is to redress the task in the first place. If changing the task isn’t possible, this is a simple way to start somewhere.

When we can’t seem to even get to that starting line, motivation research suggests the problem is often upstream in that we’ve already painted the task as an obligation. By doing so, the effort required to begin has already been inflated before we even attempt it. One way forward is to repaint it as a “get to.”

None of this dissolves our actual obligations though. What changes is the explanation for why some tasks cost so much more than the actual effort involved. Our body responds to the story attached to the task, not the task itself, and we can gain full control over that story by reframing how we think.
